So we been doing a lot of events lately at Local Roots restaurant and we decided that our farmers , the people that provide us with all of these beautiful and sometimes very rare ingredients deserve to be showcased in an event of its own ..So for the first event and to kick off our Meet the Farmers series of Dinners ,we are hosting Leaping Waters Farms and Blacksnake Meadery on October 27th 2010 in one unique event…
To give you a little bit of information , The Blacksnake Meadery provides Local Roots with a variety of Mead (honey wine ; see below)which we will be showcasing alongside some heritage (and very delicious) breed beef and pork from Leaping waters Farms.
Mead, or honey wine is an alcoholic beverage, made from honey and water via fermentation with yeast. Its alcoholic content may range from that of a mild ale to that of a strong wine. It may be still, carbonated, or sparkling; it may be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet.
Depending on local traditions and specific recipes, it may be brewed with spices, fruits, or grain mash. It may be produced by fermentation of honey with grain mash; mead may also be flavored with hops to produce a bitter, beer-like flavor.
Mead is independently multicultural. It is known from many sources of ancient history throughout Europe, Africa and Asia, although archaeological evidence of it is ambiguous. Its origins are lost in prehistory; “it can be regarded as the ancestor of all fermented drinks,” Maguelonne Toussaint-Samat has observed, “antedating the cultivation of the soil.”
Leaping Waters Farm is a family operated sustainable farm run on 300 acres of pristine mountain valleys in rural southwest Virginia. They raise Ancient White Park cattle and Large Black pigs on pasture as well as heritage breed Turkeys. These rare breed animals produce beef and pork of the highest quality. They are served in restaurants in New York and Washington DC as well as our neighbors’ dinner tables. We are very proud and fortunate we are one of the restaurants that work close with Leaping Waters Farms.
The event begins at 6:00 with a reception and followed by Dinner at 7:00 pm . A portion of this dinner will be donated to Happy Healthy Cooks Charity .Happy Healthy Cooks is a group of dedicated passionate people experiencing healthy delicious whole foods with children. They talk about food, nutrition, and how eating healthy whole foods affects our body, mind, mood, and energy level. They taste fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains in a non-threatening fun environment and COOK together in the classroom!
